Women's Lax Falls to No. 3 Wesleyan to Close Out Campaign

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's lacrosse team wrapped up the season, falling to No. 3 Wesleyan 18-4 on Wednesday from Silfen Field.

Wesleyan started quickly, jumping out to a 4-0 lead just over six minutes into the contest. Conn defense picked up the pace, but the Cardinals pushed the lead to 5-0 with 3:14 to play. The Camels got on the board at 2:24, as Campbell Johnston (Duxbury, Mass.) connected with Ava Gershon (Cranston, R.I.) for a woman-up goal to make it 5-1 after one.

Wesleyan scored the first two goals of the second quarter to extend the lead to 7-1, before Sophia Virgilio (Brightwaters, N.Y.) responded with a free-position goal at 9:31. However, the Cardinals answered with four of the final five goals of the quarter, with the lone Camel tally coming from Johnston, as Wesleyan led 11-3 at the break.

The scoring slowed down in the third quarter, as the Cardinals tallied the only three goals of the frame to take a 14-3 advantage into the fourth.

Kyra Brown scored for Wesleyan 18 seconds into the final frame, before Johnston netted her second tally on a woman-up free-position goal with 11:46 to play. The Cardinals closed out the contest with the final three goals to come away with the 18-4 victory.

Wesleyan outshot Conn 28-6, while holding a 20-3 edge on draw controls.

Ava Virga (Watertown, N.Y.) got the start in the cage finishing with seven saves. Johnston led the way with three points on two goals and one assist, while Gershon and Virgilio both chipped in a tally.

Defensively, Conn scooped up 16 ground balls, led by a team-high four from Emma McDonnell (Stevenson, Md.), while both McDonnell and Victoria Evans (Sudbury, Mass.) caused two turnovers.

Three goalies combined for the win in net, making no saves. Browne led Wesleyan with four goals, while 12 other Cardinals tallied at least one point.

Conn's season comes to a close with a 3-11 record and an 0-10 mark in conference action.
