Class of 2026 Honored at Senior Athletic Awards Reception

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Women's distance runner Grace McDonough and men's basketball player Elias Espinosa were among the student-athletes who were presented with major awards at the 2026 Connecticut College Senior Athletic Awards Reception on May 15.
 
The event, which was held in Evans Hall, celebrated the achievements of the senior class over the past four years. In addition to McDonough and Espinosa, other major awards were given to Elliot Spatz (men's soccer), Alexa Estes (women's XC/T&F), Bridget McGann (field hockey, ice hockey) and Camille Cortes (women's T&F). RJ Casey (men's basketball) and visiting head coach Harris Padegs (sailing) were also honored for their service to the department.

A total of 147 student-athletes were honored on the evening. All seniors in attendance received athletics honor cords for graduation, along with a special gift.

Connecticut College Major Award Winners
 
Anita L. DeFrantz Award (Top Female Student-Athlete): Grace McDonough
Established in 1995 by Kathryn Smith '84 and given to the female member of the graduating class whose athletic ability, leadership, and sportsmanship best exemplify the qualities of Olympic medalist Anita L. DeFrantz '74.
 
Anita L. DeFrantz Award (Top Male Student-Athlete): Elias Espinosa
Established in 1995 by Kathryn Smith '84 and given to the male member of the graduating class whose athletic ability, leadership, and sportsmanship best exemplify the qualities of Olympic medalist Anita L. DeFrantz '74.
 
Brown/Brooks Award (Top Female Scholar-Athlete): Alexa Estes, Bridget McGann
Established by the class of 1984 and given to the outstanding female student-athlete who best represents the graduating class in scholarship, leadership, and sportsmanship.
 
Brown/Brooks Award (Top Male Scholar-Athlete): Elliot Spatz
Established by the class of 1984 and given to the outstanding male student-athlete who best represents the graduating class in scholarship, leadership, and sportsmanship.
 
Erica M. Bos Award (Inspiration): Camille Cortes
Established in 1990 to honor an athlete whose courage, motivation, and relentless determination serve as an inspiration to others.
 
Andrew H. Chait Award (Service): RJ Casey, Harris Padegs
Established in 1986 to honor a member of the College community who has shown outstanding service and commitment to the Connecticut College Department of Athletics.
