MEDFORD, Mass. – The Connecticut College field hockey team fell by a 2-1 final against No. 2 Tufts University on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC showdown at Ounjian Field.
All three goals came in the first quarter, with the Jumbos taking a 2-0 advantage in the opening 10:32 of the contest. The Camels cut the deficit in half with 2:44 left in the stanza on a goal by
Sadie Gearan (Lynnfield, Mass.), and then spent the rest of the day searching for the equalizer.
Isabella Carnall (Malvern, Pa.) kept the Camels in the game with another strong outing in goal. She tallied a season-high 10 saves against 23 shots, including eight over the final three quarters as Conn hunted the tying score.
Eleanor Helm scored just over five minutes into the game to put the Jumbos on the scoreboard, and Hannah Murray added Tufts' second goal 5:30 later. The Camels wasted little time issuing a response, earning and scoring off a penalty corner before the end of the frame. The goal was Gearan's first of the season and third of her career.
Conn registered a total of four shots on goal in the opening quarter—two by Gearan and two by
Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.)—but only got one past Tufts goalie Isabel Ginns. Gearan also registered a shot in the fourth quarter but sent it wide.
Conn (1-3 overall, 0-3 NESCAC) will next play at Colby College on Sunday, September 20 at 1:00 p.m.
