Connecticut College Athletic Hall of Fame Bylaws and Operating Procedures

Article I: Purpose

The purpose of the Connecticut College Athletic Hall of Fame is to honor those who have brought distinction to themselves and Connecticut College through their achievement, commitment, sportsmanship, and leadership in athletics.

Article II: Membership

A. Individuals
Hall of Fame inductees may include alumni, coaches, faculty, administrators, or friends of the Connecticut College community.

B. Teams 
Teams that are exceptionally distinguished through outstanding achievement or significant accomplishment may also be considered.

Article III: Committee

A. Membership 
The Athletic Hall of Fame Committee shall consist of the following members (with consideration of diversity, including gender, class year, sport affiliation, and race/ethnicity):
  • Director of Athletics
  • Associate Director of Annual Giving (Camel Athletic Network liaison)
  • Sports Information Director
  • Two Faculty/Staff Members
  • Two Athletic Coaching Staff Members
  • Representative from the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
  • Member of the Alumni Board of Directors
  • Member of the Athletic Hall of Fame
  • Two Alumni At-Large
B. Terms of Service 
Terms of the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee members shall be as follows. Permanent committee members include:
  • Director of Athletics
  • Associate Director of Annual Giving (Camel Athletic Network liaison)
  • Sports Information Director
Each of the following committee members shall be eligible to serve a three-year term renewable for additional three-year term(s) at the invitation of the AHOF Committee Chair:
  • Two Faculty/Staff Members
  • Two Athletic Coaching Staff Members
  • Alumni Board of Directors representative
  • Athletic Hall of Fame member
  • Two Alumni At-Large Members
  • The Student-Adivisory Committee member will serve a one-year term.
In extenuating circumstances when a committee member must miss the annual meeting (e.g. faculty member out of the country on sabbatical leave) and is unable to participate in the selection process via email or other electronic means, a temporary replacement may be appointed by the AHOF Committee Chair in consultation with the Director of Athletics and the Associate Director of Annual Giving (Camel Athletic Network liaison).

C: Chairperson
The AHOF Committee Chairperson shall be selected by the Athletic Director from among the alumni members who wish to be considered. Those eligible may self-nominate to serve as chair after at least one year of service on the committee. The chairperson’s term is three years; and any alumni member may serve in that position.

D: Selection of Committee Members
The following committee members are determined by position at the college:
  • Director of Athletics
  • Associate Director of Annual Giving (Camel Athletic Network liaison)
  • Sports Information Director
 The following committee members shall be selected/appointed as indicated:
  • Faculty/Staff Members selected in consultation by the AHOF Committee Chair, Director of Athletics, and Associate Director of Annual Giving (Camel Athletic Network liaison)
  • Two Athletic Coaching Staff Members (one men’s team coach, one women’s team coach) as selected by the Director of Athletics
  • Alumni Board of Directors representative selected in consultation by the AHOF Committee Chair, Director of Athletics, and Associate Director of Annual Giving (Camel Athletic Network liaison)
  • Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Representative as selected by the AHOF Committee Chair.
  • Athletic Hall of Fame representative as self-nominated or nominated by AHOF Committee members and selected in consultation by the AHOF Committee Chair, Director of Athletics, and Associate Director of Annual Giving (Camel Athletic Network liaison)
  • Two Alumni At-Large as self-nominated or nominated by AHOF Committee members and selected in consultation by the AHOF Committee Chair, Director of Athletics, and the Associate Director of Annual Giving (Camel Athletic Network liaison)
E: Duties
The primary task of the committee is to annually select honorees for induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame. The committee also shall periodically review the AHOF bylaws and update them as necessary. Additional responsibilities may be assigned and subcommittees created to help fulfill the mission of the AHOF.

F: Meetings
The Athletic Hall of Fame Committee will meet at least once annually at the convenience of the committee with additional meetings as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the AHOF Committee.                                                                                          
                                                                  
Article IV:  Nominations/Eligibility

A: Nomination Form
  • Athletic Hall of Fame nominations shall be solicited from members of the entire Connecticut College community.
  • The nomination form (or information leading to the nomination form) shall appear annually in the appropriate College publications and permanently on the College’s web site on both the Alumni and Athletics pages.
  • Nominations should be on the appropriate form or in a written letter and should be supported by accurate and specific information, including justification for induction. Credentials shall be researched for accuracy by the Sports Information Office and Alumni Relations Office.
  • Self-nominations or unsigned/anonymous nominations will not be accepted.
  B: Submission of Nominations
  • Nominations shall be submitted to the AHOF Committee Chair and/or the Director of Athletics.  On-line submissions will automatically be forwarded to these two individuals.
  C: Eligibility
  • Alumni Eligibility: Alumni are eligible for nomination at any time beginning five years after graduation from Connecticut College. An alumnus who has not received a degree may be nominated when five years have elapsed since the class he/she entered has graduated. The Athletic Hall of Fame Committee may use its discretion in exceptional or extraordinary circumstances for non-graduates of the college.
  • Coach/Administrator Eligibility: Coaches and administrators who are not Connecticut College alumni shall be eligible for induction five years after leaving the College.
  • Ineligibility: Members of the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee shall not be eligible for selection while serving on the committee.
Article V:  Selection of Inductees

A: A quorum (one more than half of the committee members) must be present for Athletic Hall of Fame business to be conducted.

B: To earn selection into the Athletic Hall of Fame, a nominee must receive a vote from two-thirds of the full selection committee.

C: No more than four individuals (five if one is deceased) may be selected each year for induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

D: In any given year, the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is not required to select members for induction.

E: Qualified nominees not selected for induction shall remain on the master nomination list.  

F: The slate of inductees selected by the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee shall be approved by the President of the College.  
 
Article VI:  Induction Ceremony

Events celebrating the selection of new Athletic Hall of Fame members (i.e., unveiling of the plaques, reception, dinner, induction ceremony) will take place at a suitable time in a ceremony coordinated by the Department of Athletics.

A: The Athletic Hall of Fame is located in the Charles B. Luce Athletic Center and includes a permanent display of replica plaques presented each year to the inductees. The Department of Athletics is responsible for securing the plaques and maintaining the Hall of Fame.

B: An Athletic Hall of Fame keeper plaque will be presented to each inductee at the induction ceremony.

C: A perpetual plaque containing the names of all members of the Athletic Hall of Fame will be maintained by the Alumni Relations Office and prominently displayed in Becker House.

Article VII:  Kathryn Dornan Smith ’84 Award

A: Description and Purpose     
  • Established in 2016, the Kathryn Dornan Smith ’84 Award honors individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the Connecticut College Department of Athletics and Physical Education.  This award recognizes outstanding service and support to the department.  The award is named in honor of Kathryn Dornan Smith ’84, who served as Chair of the Connecticut College Athletic Hall of Fame Committee from 2001 to 2011.  Through her inspired leadership and tireless dedication, the Hall of Fame Room was created and the annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was transformed into one of the college’s most engaging and vibrant events.
B: Submission of Nominations
  • Nominations shall be submitted to the AHOF Committee Chair and/or the Director of Athletics. 
  • Nominations should be in written form and should be supported by accurate and specific information, including justification for recognition.
  • Nominations may be submitted by any current member of the AHOF Committee or any current employee of the Department of Athletics and Physical Education.
  • Self-nominations or unsigned/anonymous nominations will not be accepted.
C: Eligibility
  • There are no restrictions on who may be eligible for this award.
D: Selection
  • A nominee must receive a vote from two-thirds of the full AHOF Committee to be honored.
  • This award may be given as frequently or infrequently as the AHOF Committee deems appropriate based on the qualifications of current nominees.

Article VIII: Changes

Amendments to these guidelines should be proposed by members of the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. Proposed changes shall become effective upon the agreement of a simple majority of the committee and ratification by the Connecticut College Alumni Board of Directors.
