NEW LONDON, Conn.—John McGinnis (Cocoa, Fla.) and Daniel Weiniger (Warren, N.J.) scored goals 2:12 apart in the opening period and eighth ranked Bowdoin College went on to defeat Connecticut College 7-1 in a NESCAC game played in New London Saturday.
The Polar Bears improved their record to 9-0-1 with a 5-0-1 record in conference play. The Camels slip to 2-5-1 with a 1-4-1 record in conference action.
McGinnis scored twice to lead the visitors. Harry Matheson (Kingston, Ontario), Danny Palumbo (Suwanee, Ga.) and Colin Downey (East Sandwich, Mass.) all contributed with a goal and an assist for the winning side. Kyle Lockwood (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Tim McGarry (Kennett Square, Pa.) recorded two assists each. Sophomore net-minder Max Fenkell (Meadowbrook, Pa.) collected 13 of his 27 saves in the middle period to earn the victory in goal.
Freshman Tim DiPretoro (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored his second goal of the season for Connecticut College in the second period. Mike Doyle (Merrimac, Mass.) and Steve Servideo (Medford, Mass.) assisted on the marker. Mike Petchonka (Ridgefield, Conn.) had 24 saves in two periods of action for the hosts. Tom Conlin (Norwood, Mass.) made 11 stops in the third for the Camels.
Bowdoin held a 42-to-28 edge in shots. The visitors were 2-for-6 on their power play and held the Camels scoreless in five power-play attempts.
The visitors took a 1-0 lead at 6:06 of the opening frame as McGinnis took a puck that was caromed off the boards and flicked one in for his third of the season. Just 2:12 later, the Polar Bears doubled their lead with the goal that proved to be the game-winner. Lockwood made a nifty drop pass to Weiniger and the Garden State product notched his ninth of the season and 102nd point of his career.
The Polar Bears tacked on their third goal 36 seconds into the middle period. Harry Matheson (Kingston, Ontario) potted his fourth goal of the season with assists coming from McGarry and Downey. DiPretoro responded for the Camels at the 2:36 mark. But the visitors added goals from Palumbo and McGinnis to build a 5-1 lead after two and continued to pull away for the 7-1 win.
