Men's Ice Hockey

#12 Williams College 5, Connecticut College 2 Cangelosi, DiPretoro Supply Scores for Camels

NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Williams College men's hockey team scored three goals in the third period of play to hold off Connecticut College in a 5-2 NESCAC victory in front of 350 spectators at Dayton Arena Friday night.

The 12th ranked Ephs improve their record to 2-0-1 while the Camels slip to 0-3.

Paul Steinig (Williamsville, N.Y.), Frankie Mork (Victoria, Minn.) and George Hunkele (West Haven. Conn.) all contributed with a goal and an assist for the winning side.

Junior net-minder Sean Dougherty (Smithtown, N.Y.) stopped 29 shots between the pipes.

Connecticut College junior JC Cangelosi (Estero, Fla.) potted his third goal of the season in the opening period of action. Tim DiPretoro (Philadelphia, Pa.) went five-hole with a penalty shot in the third period of action for his second score of the year.

Mike Petchonka (Ridgefield, Conn.) had 17 saves for the hosts.

Special teams proved to be the difference in the contest. Connecticut College enjoyed a 31-to-22 advantage in shots but Williams executed on three of its seven power plays to pull out the victory.

The visitors opened the scoring 5:56 into the first period. Matt Doyle (Glen Rock, N.J.) buried a one-timer from the left circle with the man advantage. But the Camels responded with a power-play marker of their own midway through the frame. Cangeolosi supplied the equalizer with Mike Doyle (Merrimac, Mass.) and Greg Liatuad (Butler, N.J.).

However, with 7:29 to go in the first, the Ephs regained their lead with another power play goal. Steinig went top shelf with a wrist shot from below the right circle to put the visitors on top for good. Craig Kitto (Ashburn, Va.) set up the goal with one of his two assists on the night.

In the middle period, the Camels had their chances. Connecticut College held an 11-to-5 edge in shots during the frame. Cangelosi and Mike Sinsigalli did a nice job in applying pressure but Dougherty stopped all 11 shots in the period and the visitors were able to cling to the 2-1 edge after two.

Petchonka had his moments of brilliance in this one. The score was not indicative of his performance. With 7:16 left, Petchonka denied Kitto from point blank range with a nifty looking stop.

However, the Ephs tacked on the critical insurance marker with 6:42 remaining. Petchonka had to go into a dive to cut off an angle on Kitto and Mork was able to put one in with the keeper down on the ice.

Connecticut College will host Middlebury tomorrow afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. game. The Ephs will visit Tufts for a 4:00 p.m. game in Malden, Mass.
