Connecticut College Repeats as CWPA Division III Champions

SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- Connecticut College's Nicky Jasbon (Jr., Greenacres, Fla./Saint Andrews) picks up honors as Most Valuable Player of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship for the second year in a row as the Division III No. 10-ranked Camels built a 5-1 halftime lead and cruised to a 7-3 victory over Division III No. 9 Washington & Jefferson College to repeat as CWPA Division III Champions.

The second team to claim consecutive Division III crowns by joining 2010-to-2012 champion Grove City College, Connecticut's victory earns the team an automatic berth to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship on Friday-Sunday, Apil 25-27, at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa. against No. 10 Princeton University, No. 14 Indiana University, No. 17 Hartwick College, No. 18 University of Michigan, Brown University, the host Bison and an At-Large team which will be announced in the middle of the upcoming week.  Seeds for the championship will be announced later this week as well.

"Our team defense is what won us the championship," Connnecticut College junior co-captain Abbey Wrobleski said. "We played together and helped each other every play of the game."

Connecticut never trailed in the game as Jasbon put the Camels in front with 6:52 left in the first quarter.  W&J responded nearly a minute later as Sara Boldt (Jr., Grand Haven, Mich./East Kentwood) beat Connecticut goalie Susan Doetsch (Fr., Arnold, Md./Broadneck) with a rising shot to knot the score at one-all, but Kelsey Millward (So., Bale d'Urfe, Quebec/Loomis Chaffee) returned the lead to Connecticut 54 seconds later by beating Presidents' goalie Morgan Kinyon (Jr., Stockton, Calif./Oakdale) at the 5:02 mark.

The Camels pushed the lead to 3-1 prior to the conclusion of the quarter as Kate Jacobson (Jr., Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) twisted a shot around the body on Kinyon and into the cage to put Washington & Jefferson in a hole from which it proved to be unable to climb out of the rest of the way.

Neither team found the back of the cage again until the 3:03 mark of the second quarter as Jasbon converted on a five-meter penalty shot chance in the wake of a call against W&J's Catherine Villa (Sr., Poway, Calif./Poway) to push the margin to 4-1.  Sam Pierce (So., Windsor, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) cushioned the lead and made Connecticut's hopes of repeating as Division III champions more of a reality at the 1:32 mark as she ripped in a man-up strike after the ejection of Rachel Clauss (So., South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) with 1:52 left in the first half for a 5-1 lead at the break.

For Washington & Jefferson, the third quarter was too quiet as the Camels were unable to extend their lead further, but morre importantly the Presidents were stymied in making up ground to keep the spread at four goals entering the fourth quarter.

The four-goal at the break would prove to be the undoing of Washington & Jefferson as Isabelle Baneux (So., Ithaca, N.Y./New Trier (Ill.) added another insurance marker 41 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it 6-1 with 7:19 left in regulation.

Washington & Jefferson attempted to execute a dramatic comeback as Brittany Patterson (Fr., North Wales, Pa./North Penn) moved the Presidents within 6-2 with 5:15 left on the clock, but Jacobson converted on a man-up chance at 1:23 following an ejection call against Madison Nervig (Fr., Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) at 1:42 to net the backbreaking tally as Connecticut claimed a five-goal lead (7-2) with just 83 seconds to go in the CWPA Division III season.

The lead was too much for Washington & Jefferson to overcome as the Presidents could muster a man-up score by Margot Wummer (Sr., Havertown, Pa./Germantown Academy) with 20 seconds left and nothing more in falling for the third time in three Division III title game berths.

Prior to 2014, W&J previously dropped title game chances against Grove City in 2011 (7-2 L at Macalester) and 2012 (10-3 L at Grove City) after finishing fourth at the first Division III Championship in 2010 at Utica College (12-7 L vs. Wheaton).  This marks the second time in as many years the Camels terminate Washington & Jefferson's title hopes as Connecticut went the distance in an 8-7 semifinal win last season at home in New London, Conn. before downing Grove City 6-3 for the program's first Division III crown.

The championship marks the first title as a head coach for Connecticut's Ryan Pryor as the Camels' acting coach served as an assistant last season.
