Connecticut College 73, Roger Williams U. 60 Stifling Camel Defense Limits Hawks to Five Second Half FGs

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Connecticut College men's basketball team erased an six point halftime deficit to secure its first win of the season, a 73-60 triumph against visiting Roger Williams at Luce Field House Sunday.

The Camels improved their record to 1-2 with the win, while the Hawks fell to 2-3 with the setback.

"We have improved a lot since our last game and we have so much more we can improve upon," Connecticut College Head Men's Basketball Coach Tom Satran said.  "We are pleased and fortunate to have won."

Junior forward Daniel Janel (pictured, Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) and freshman Tyler Rowe (East Hartford, Conn.) netted 13 points each to lead the Camels in the victory.  Janel added five rebounds, two steals and an assist to his stat-line. He scored 11 of his 13 points in the second stanza. Rowe was 6-for-10 from the field and had six rebounds and four assists for the Camels.

Sophomore Lee Messier (Narragansett, R.I.) chipped in with 12 points, five boards and three helpers. Sean McNally (Hanover, Mass.) was 4-for-6 from the field en route to his 11 point output. Junior co-captain Zuri Pavlin (New York, N.Y.) ripped down a game-high 15 rebounds to go with his eight points and three assists.

Roger Williams University sophomore forward Conor O'Brien (Sharon, Mass.) finished with a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds in a 6-for-12 shooting performance. Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) reached double-digits with 11 points. Andrew Wasik (Gainesville, Fla.) added nine points for the visitors in the setback.

Rowe knocked down a jumper with 11:43 remaining in the half to put the Camels on top 18-9. Later on with 8:18 to play, the Camels enjoyed their largest lead of the half at 23-13 after Pavlin converted on a pair of free throws.

But the Hawks put together a 14-to-4 run at the end of the half to turn a three point deficit into an eight point lead.  Josh Syska (Peabody, Mass.) connected on two free throws with 17 seconds left to put the visitors on top 39-31. However, Rowe canned a jumper just before the horn sounded for the Camels and Roger Williams carried a 39-33 lead into the break.

A big part of the story in the second half was the Camel defense. The Hawks shot 50% from the field and were 4-for-8 from long distance. But in the second stanza, the Camels extended their defense well beyond the three-point line with a variety of looks that included both zone and one-on-one packages.  Roger Williams was limited to just two three-pointers on 15 attempts (13%) and shot just 17% from the field (5-for-29) over the final 20 minutes of action.

With 15:30 remaining, sophomore Aaron Swenson (Waltham, Mass.) dialed long distance with a triple from the left side of the arch just as the shot clock was expiring to provide the Camels with their first lead of the half at 44-43.

Connecticut College mounted a 10-to-0 run in a span of 4:15 to build a 14 point advantage and put the game out of reach. Janel converted a pair of field goals during the run before Pavlin capped the rally with a thunderous slam dunk with 56 seconds to go that made it a 73-59 contest.

The Camels were able to limit the Hawks to a single free throw after that and held on for the 73-60 victory.

The Hawks will host intra-state rival Salve Regina University Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m. game in Bristol, R.I.

The Camels will play next Tuesday night when they visit Clark University for a 7:00 p.m. game in Worcester, Mass.
