Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Daniel Janel(Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) scored eight of his 12 points in the second half and visiting Connecticut College put forth an excellent second half defensive effort en route to a 64-60 win over Clark University in non-league men's basketball action on Tuesday evening at the Kneller Athletic Center.
The win for the Camels is their second straight, evening their record at 2-2, while the Cougars have hit a rough patch, dropping five consecutive contests to slip to 1-5.
"Clark really went after every rebound with great intensity and that almost was enough for them to beat us," Connecticut College Head Men's Basketball Coach Tom Satran said. "At the same time our team can enjoy some credit for not giving in to multiple three possession deficits on the road. We have a lot to improve upon in our next practice but we are making progress daily."
After the Cougars went into halftime ahead, 36-28, Connecticut College clamped down in the second stanza, holding the Scarlet and White to just 33 percent shooting and to just one basket in the final three minutes of the game.
Turning Point:
Janel had a pair of energizing buckets during a key 13-3 run that pushed the Camels ahead, erasing what had been a nine point deficit less than five minutes earlier. In addition to Janel's interior prowess, David Labossiere(pictured, Stoneham, Mass.) had a pair of acrobatic baskets during the game-changing run.
The game was tied at 57-57 after David Mercier (Milford, Mass.) found Corey Gomes (Uxbridge, Mass.) for an inside hoop – the Cougars last - but Labossiere followed a Lee Messier (Narragansett, R.I.) free throw with a steal and hoop, putting the visitors ahead to stay.
Standout Stars:
Janel played a huge part in the comeback, finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds on 6-for-9 shooting in 28 minutes.
Tyler Rowe (East Hartford, Conn.) played well from his lead guard position for the Camels, totaling nine points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals, while Messier (11) and Labossiere (nine) combined for 20 points.
Clark, meanwhile, got a pair of standout efforts from guards Brendan Kittredge (Clinton, Mass.) and John Pisacreta (Andover, Mass.). They each finished with career-highs of 14 points, shooting a combined 10-for-17 from the field, including an impressive 7-for-12 from behind the arc.
Lamar Berk (Saint Augustine, Fla.) just missed out on his first career double-double for the Cougars, ending with eight points and ten rebounds.
Inside The Numbers:
Connecticut College shot 49 percent from the field for the game, including a sizzling 56 percent in the final 20 minutes (13-for-23). With Janel leading the way, the Camels also held a 30-18 edge in points in the paint but the Scarlet and White held a slight 38-33 edge on the boards.
