NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's water polo team split a pair of games to conclude tournament play at the Lott Natatorium on Sunday afternoon. With the winningest senior class in program history leading the way, the Camels first rallied from a four-goal deficit in the second half to defeat La Salle, a Division I opponent, by a 12-11 decision before ending the day with a 17-10 setback against Penn State Behrend.
Connecticut College 12, La Salle 11
La Salle controlled play against Connecticut College in the early going and built up leads of 7-4 in the second quarter and 10-6 in the third. The Camels, however, were relentless and fought all the way back to come from behind and earn a one-goal victory.
With their backs to the wall and trailing by four, Arturo Freitas (Weston, Fla.) started the rally by scoring at the 3:11 mark of the third quarter. Stephan Cress (Rockford, Mich.), who is one of four seniors playing in his final games this weekend, then took over by scoring two of his game-high five goals to slash the deficit to one before Freitas later gave the Camels the lead at 11-10 by finding the back of the net with 4:25 left. With senior goalie Matthew Wagman (Atlanta, Ga.) continuing to keep the Explorer offense silent, Dylan Pinckert (Long Beach, Calif.), another senior leader, fired home the deciding marker with just 21 seconds left to give the hosts a thrilling victory.
Penn State Behrend 17, Connecticut College 10
Penn State Behrend, which was playing its only match of the day, proved to be too much for Connecticut College in its first-ever Green Dot game later in the day. The Lions ended the first quarter ahead by a 4-2 score and ballooned their lead up to as many as seven goals in the third quarter before eventually winning by the same margin.
Connecticut College (7-12) will next head to Mercyhurst in Erie, Pa. to compete at the Mid-Atlantic West Division Championships beginning on Saturday, Nov. 4.
