Men's Water Polo Drops Two Matches in California

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Connecticut College men's water polo team dropped its opening two matches at the Gary Troyer Tournament hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday. The Camels fell to Chapman, 18-10, in the morning before facing a 17-10 setback against the host Stags later in the day.

Chapman scored the first five goals and burst out to a 13-1 lead without looking back. Sophomores Timofey Belobordov (Moscow, Russia) and Rahul Gill (Bethesda, Md.) netted back-to-back markers in the waning minutes of the second period, but the initial deficit would be too much to overcome.

The Camels got on the board first when sophomore Sean King (La Canada, Calif.) found the back of the net at the 7:11 mark of the first period. CMS, however, quickly recovered and rattled off six straight to establish control. The Stags grew their lead up to a six-goal margin in the third before eventually closing the game on a 3-0 run to win by seven.

Sophomore Arturo Freitas (Weston, Fla.) and senior Stephan Cress (Rockford, Mich.) paced the offense by netting a combined five and four goals, respectively, during the two contests. Senior Matthew Wagman (Atlanta, Ga.) most notably made eight saves during the later game against the Stags.

Connecticut College (2-8) concludes tournament action tomorrow when it faces Occidental at 2:00 p.m. and Cal Tech at 7:00 p.m. EST.
