Camels Place Fourth at Division III Conference Championship

Cry, Anderson Honored on All-Tournament Team for Camels

ST. PAUL, Minn.--The Connecticut College women's water polo team placed fourth at the Division III Championship hosted by Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota this weekend.

The Camels (9-16), who had captured four consecutive Division III Crowns, congratulate Macalester College and Head Coach Scott Reed, who pulled out a 10-9 victory in overtime against Washington & Jefferson College to win the 2017 conference championship in the North Star State. 

The Camels opened the weekend by taking a 7-6 thriller against the Scots of Monmouth College in overtime.  Senior Brianna Harrity (Jeffersonville, Pa.) had a hat-trick to lead the Camels with three goals, one assist and a pair of steals. Junior Shannon Cry (Monterey, Calif.) scored twice for the winning side.

Kaitlin Regan (Saratoga, Calif.) had a goal and three assists for the Camels.  Junior Sophia Soriano (Summerland, Calif.) chipped in with a single marker.  Senior All-American Sarah Sovia (Pottstown, Pa.) made six saves while adding an assist in the cage for the Camels.

The Scots carried a 1-0 lead after one quarter of and had a 3-2 lead at the break. But in the third quarter the Camels used goals from Harrity and Soriano to even things up at four aside. Regan provided the Camels with a 5-4 advantage with her goal midway through the fourth quarter before the Scots tied it up again to force the extra session. 

Harrity got the Camels on the board 1:30 into the extra session before the visitors tied the game at six. In the closing moments with seven seconds left, Connecticut College Head Men's and Women's Water Polo Coach called time out to set up his offense. Regan was able to assist Cry for the game-winner and the Camels celebrated with the 7-6 triumph.

In the second round of action, the Camels clashed with Washington & Jefferson in a rematch of the 2016 Championship match in New London that the Camels won by a count of 13-3. In this match up, the Presidents were able to hold off Connecticut College in an 8-5 win. 

Junior All-American April Anderson (Mill Valley, Calif.) paced the Camels with three goals and two steals. Elaine Dealy (Pawling, N.Y.) and Harrity both contributed with a goal and an assist in the setback. Regan added one assists for the Camels.

Cry posted a team-best five steals while Harrity finished with two pilfers. Sovia made nine saves in the cage.

The Camels wrapped up the season Sunday with a 9-5 loss to the Lady Reds of Carthage College. Harrity netted four goals to lead the Camels in her final collegiate match. Anderson sandwiched a goal around a pair of assists while adding four earned exclusions. 

Soriano chipped in with one assist. Cry induced four turnovers while Sovia finished with five saves in the cage. 

At the conclusion of the tournament CWPA Publicist Ed Haas and the coaches tabbed juniors April Anderson and Shannon Cry to the All-Tournament Second Team for Connecticut College.
