CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Connecticut College women's water polo team fell to No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by a 13-3 score at Axelrood Pool on Thursday afternoon.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored the first two goals of the contest and led from wire-to-wire. Senior April Anderson (Mill Valley, Calif.) found the back of the net twice in the opening quarter to close the gap to 2-1 at the 5:11 mark of the opening quarter and 4-2 with 1:20 remaining, but the Athenas outscored the Camels by a 6-0 score in the second and capped an 8-0 run when Claire Baxter and Aracelia netted goals just 57 seconds apart in the third frame.
Baxter finished with four goals and four steals to lead the way for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (8-5), which had eight different players combine to score 13 goals. Anna Fry finished with two goals and two assists, while goalie Chandlyr Denaro made three saves.
The Camels were paced by freshman Stephania Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) and Anderson. Lopez provided three steals, one goal and one assist, and Anderson finished with two markers. Junior Sabrina Afshinnekoo (New York, N.Y.) turned away four shots between the posts.
Connecticut College (2-3) will continue its challenging road trip on the West Coast when it faces No. 3 California Lutheran on Saturday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. EST.
