Volleyball Rallies Past Salve Regina in Four Sets

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Katie Howley (Scituate, Mass.) registered a double-double of the kill-dig variety in leading the Connecticut College volleyball team to a four-set victory over Salve Regina on Tuesday evening at the Charles B. Luce Field House. Set scores were 16-25, 25-15, 25-20, and 25-16.

After dropping the first set, the Camels recovered to win the next three for the second straight outing. Despite falling behind by a 6-1 score in the second frame, the hosts recovered by embarking on an 8-0 run to prompt the Seahawks to take a timeout. Howley recorded three service aces during the hot stretch before freshman Katie Gunderman (Oakland, Calif.) dropped an ace of her own to extend the margin to twin figures at 21-11. A kill by sophomore Avery Light (Sudbury, Mass.) gave the Camels a 25-15 set victory and evened the overall score.

Salve Regina (1-5) once again got off to a quick start and built up a 7-1 advantage in the third set, which was capped by a Madison Lee kill that was set up by Olivia Noonan. However, the Camels once again stormed back and took their first lead on a successful dump by senior captain Grace McGee (Portland, Ore.) which made it 11-10. Freshman Annie Wibbelsman then added four kills over six plays to create a 16-11 score and force the visitors to take timeout, and the Camels held off a late surge by the Seahawks to clinch a 25-20 set win.

The Camels started off strong for the first time in the fourth set and eventually earned their third win of the season in four tries by hitting at a .548 clip in the frame. Despite falling behind by scores of 7-6 and 8-7 on kills by Annie Donahue and Lee, respectively, the hosts responded by having McGee set up Light and sophomore Eliza Wolcott (San Francisco, Calif.) for back-to-back kills. Gunderman put the team up by a touchdown at 21-14 by finishing a pass from Wolcott, and freshman Georgia Quesnelle (Marblehead, Mass.) put the game on ice by smashing her first career kill as a collegian.

Howley led the way for Connecticut College (3-1) with 13 kills and 10 digs to go along with four aces. Wibbelsman tallied 12 kills and hit at a .417, while Gunderman recorded a .444 hitting percentage by finishing with eight kills and not committing an error on 18 swings. McGee contributed 34 assists and eight digs.

Salve Regina got a double-double effort from Lee, who notched 10 kills and 11 digs. Katie Linekin added a game-high 14 digs, and Noonan also posted a twin figure with 23 helpers.

Connecticut College will hit the road for the first time when it travels to Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday for a tri-match with Emerson and the host Warriors. The Camels will first play Eastern Connecticut State at 11 a.m.
