Women's Soccer Blanks Johnson & Wales, 2-0, in Home Opener

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) and junior Kat Norton (Hampton, Conn.) each found the back of the net to help lift the Connecticut College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Johnson & Wales in its home opener at Freeman Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Johnson put the Camels on the board in the 17th minute when she took a through ball from junior Tori Kretzmer (Glastonbury, Conn.), dribbled around an unprotected Colleen Lynch, and fired in a left-footed shot to the far post. Sophomore Marielle McEnaney (Orleans, Mass.) nearly doubled the margin off a corner kick attempted by Alyssa Kogelmann (Guilderland, N.Y.), but her header aimed at the left post was stopped on the goal line and cleared away by a Wildcat defender.

The Camels, who had a 19-9 shot advantage in the match, wasted no time doubling the margin in the early stages of the second half by getting a marker from Norton on a breakaway opportunity in addition to gaining other quality scoring opportunities. The Wildcats were able to keep themselves within striking distance by registering another team save off a shot attempt by senior captain Zoe Stublarec (Rockfall, Conn.), and they also dodged a bullet when Norton misfired on an open net in the waning minutes after catching Lynch out of position. However, the Camel defense being primarily anchored by sophomore Maegen Dillon (San Anselmo, Calif.), senior Erin O'Brien Powers (Portland, Ore.), sophomore Emily Lorry (Wynnewood, Pa.), and junior Shannon Finnegan (Hopkinton, Mass.) held its ground to help preserve the shutout win.

Junior Katy Pelletier (Topsfield, Mass.) picked up her first clean sheet as a collegian by making five saves between the posts for the Camels. Lynch of Johnson & Wales (0-5) also turned away five shots in the losing effort.

Connecticut College (3-0) will look to remain unbeaten when it next hosts Bates on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 11:30 a.m.
