Men's Ice Hockey Falls to Amherst in Return to NESCAC Action

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team was dealt a 3-0 setback by Amherst in its return to NESCAC action on Friday evening at Dayton Arena.

After killing off a penalty, Connecticut College had a myriad of chances to score while continuing to applying pressure in the eighth and ninth minute of the game. The Camels fired five shots at Dan Dachille in the short timeframe, but two of them were blocked by defenders and three were turned aside by the netminder. A loose puck to the left side of the crease following a block off an attempt by freshman Younghoon Choi (Seoul, South Korea) from the top of the slot was unable to find its way into the net with a Camel in the area to bury it.

Shortly after dodging several bullets, the pendulum suddenly swung the way of the Mammoths. A clear attempt up the ice by senior Camel goaltender Connor Rodericks (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) was stolen away in the neutral zone and at center ice by AJ Klein. The Amherst forward came in on a breakaway and had his shot stuffed by Rodericks, but Jack Lloyd was able to pot the rebound to suddenly put the visitors on the board at the 8:53 mark and stun the home crowd.

Amherst (3-9-1, NESCAC 2-6), which carried a 1-0 advantage into the first intermission, scored in the blink of an eye to double their margin just 33 seconds into the second period. Following a one-timer by sophomore Stephen Senese (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) that missed wide right of the target, Stephen Rex intercepted a pass along the boards in the neutral zone and began a breakaway. Rex made the extra pass to Joey Luopo on his right, and Luopo unleashed a shot from behind the dot that barely sneaked inside the near post.

The Mammoths continued to keep the Camel offense at bay into the third period and netted an insurance tally at the 7:03 mark when Matteo Mangiardi collected a loose puck through traffic inside the left faceoff circle and fired an off-balance shot past Rodericks. The marker provided more than enough comfort for the visitors to come away with their third victory of the season.

Dachille picked up the shutout victory for Amherst by making 35 saves, while Rodericks suffered the loss for Connecticut College despite turning away 33 shots.

Connecticut College (6-7, NESCAC 2-5) will next host Hamilton tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
