Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Trinity by a 104-94 score in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Charles B. Luce Field House.
In overtime, Connecticut College gained a 90-86 lead with 27.9 seconds left when junior Jack Zimmerman (Bedford, N.H.) pulled up and converted a 3-pointer from the right arc. Trinity, however, would not back down. Nick Seretta and Zimmerman each exchanged a free throw, and the Bantams got a putback basket from Christian Porydzy following two missed shots to create a 91-89 score with 2.1 seconds left. Forced to foul, the Bantams then put junior Austin Nwafor (East Hartford, Conn.) at the line with 0.5 seconds on the clock.
Nwafor missed the first and made the second, giving the Bantams one last chance to throw a prayer, and Porydzy unbelievingly came through for them by converting a game-tying 3-pointer from nearly the full length of the court on the left side that beat the buzzer.
Seizing a tidal wave of momentum with the desperation shot, Trinity then dominated the second overtime and outscored the Camels, 12-2, in the upcoming frame. Connecticut College failed to make a field goal during the five-minute stretch, allowing the Bantams to run away with a 10-point win.
The Camels started the game ahead by a 12-5 score before the visitors regrouped and took their first lead, 19-17, on a jumper by Colin Donovan. The teams battled back-and-forth through five ties and five lead changes until Trinity found itself up by a 47-44 at the recess.
McPherron put the hosts back ahead by a 50-49 score during a tight second half in which neither side led by more than four points. Donovan gave Trinity an 81-78 lead by sinking free throws with 1:27 remaining, but junior Jeff Allen (Madison, Conn.) canned a clutch 3-pointer to force overtime.
Despite a valiant effort with the largest home crowd of the season behind them, the Camels would be unable to keep their momentum going. Porydzy netted five points in the final three seconds of overtime, including a desperation 3-pointer to tie the game, which eventually catapulted his team forward through a second overtime and seal their second NESCAC win of the season.
Donald Jorden Jr. registered 20 points and a jaw-dropping 24 rebounds to pace Trinity (10-6, NESCAC 2-2). Donovan scored 22 points, and Joseph Bell added 17 points off the bench. Kyle Padmore contributed nine points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
McPherron scored a career-high 25 points and to lead the way for Connecticut College. He also finished with seven rebounds and three steals. Allen was also among five Camels to net twin figures, scoring 17 points, and Zimmerman ended the game with 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Connecticut College (3-13, NESCAC 0-4) will look for a reversal of fortune when it next travels to Salve Regina on Tuesday evening for a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
