Men's Ice Hockey Completes Weekend Sweep at Home With 2-1 Triumph Over Wesleyan

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior captain Ryan Petti (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored his ninth goal of the season and classmate Connor Rodericks (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) made 35 saves, including 18 in the third period alone, as the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team defeated Wesleyan by a 2-1 score on Saturday afternoon at Dayton Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the Camels got on the board first at the midway point of the second courtesy of sophomore Steven Senese (Niagara Falls, N.Y.). Junior Kyle Moss (Sutton, Mass.) started the play from the left side of the Camels' defensive zone by sending a pass up to classmate Paul Capozzi (Lake Forest, Ill.), who flew up the right side and in towards Tim Sestak. Capozzi fired a shot that was saved by Sestak, and Senese cleaned up by potting the rebound through traffic at 10:48.

Wesleyan (9-7, NESCAC 5-5), which outshot the Camels by a 19-6 margin in the final frame, finally got one past a red-hot Rodericks to even the score at 5:51. Shortly after missing a backhander on a golden 2-on-1 opportunity, Tyler Wyatt cashed in on another opportunity by deflecting an initial shot taken by Quincy Gregg from behind the left dot. Tyler Levine, who found Gregg with a pass from behind the goal, was also credited with an assist on the play.

The Camels, however, regained the lead for good just seven minutes later. Working against a strong forecheck by the Cardinals, senior Dan Driscoll (Salem, Mass.) received a short pass from Petti and then sent the puck back up the center of the ice to the captain, who split the defense on a 3-on-2 and buried the puck to the top left corner of the nylon. Rodericks turned away five more shots, which included stopping a shot from the left point by Gregg in the waning seconds and covering up the rebound, to secure back-to-back wins for the team.

Rodericks turned away 35 shots to finish with 78 saves on 79 chances through the weekend and earn the win between the pipes for Connecticut College. Wesleyan's Sestak made stops in the losing effort.

Connecticut College (8-7-1, NESCAC 4-5-1) will begin a three-game road trip when it visits Williams on Friday night at 7 p.m.
