Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team dropped a home NESCAC matchup to Williams by a 71-62 score on Friday evening at the Charles B. Luce Field House.
Jack Zimmerman (Bedford, N.H.) drained a 3-pointer to put the Camels ahead on the first possession of the game before the Ephs struck back with five unanswered. But after junior Dan Draffan (Hamden, Conn.) put back a miss to tie the game at 5-5, the visitors broke loose by netting 16 straight points to break the game open with seven different players putting themselves in the scorebook through seven minutes of action. The Camels came within 10 when junior Austin Nwafor (East Hartford, Conn.) found Draffan for another layup and found themselves trailing by 12 at the break.
The second half was more evenly played and began with freshman Ben McPherron (Weston, Mass.) driving in for a layup on the Camels' first possession. However, the Ephs were able to answer by getting a trifecta from Spencer Spivy to maintain a double-digit lead. Even though the hosts were competitive throughout the second half, they were unable to make up enough ground from the early hole they had to dig themselves out of from the opening stages of the first half. Draffan sank a jumper with 2:55 left to bring the margin down to single digits at 66-58, but that was as close as Connecticut College would come. Jovan Jones converted a layup on the team's next possession, and the Ephs hit free throws in the final minute to hold off the Camels for their 10th win of the season.
Williams (10-9, NESCAC 3-3) was led by Matthew Karpowicz, who finished with 16 points by shooting 7-of-10 from the field and 2-of-3 from long range. He also had five rebounds, two assists, and two blocked shots. Spivy contributed 14 points and four boards, while Cole Prowitt-Smith notched 10 points and two rebounds in a reserve role.
Draffan and junior Jeff Allen (Madison, Conn.) paced Connecticut College with 16 and 15 points, respectively, while grabbing seven boards apiece. Allen also dished out three assists. McPherron ended the game with 11 points and six rebounds.
Connecticut College (3-15, NESCAC 0-5) will next host No. 10 Middlebury tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
