NEW LONDON, Conn. – Led by the winning performance of sophomore
Aili Moffet (Jamestown, R.I.) and senior
Charlotte Williams (Cambridge, Mass.), the Connecticut College sailing program competed for the second straight weekend against Boston College in the Thames River Challenge on Saturday afternoon.
"After a week of adjustments and focusing on starting this week in practice, we were very happy with our performance against Boston College today," said head coach
Jeff Bresnahan. "I am so excited for Aili and Charlotte for getting the overall win. They finished sixth last week and worked hard in practice getting ready for Charlotte's last fall event of her college career."
Moffet and Williams won the regatta and cruised to victory by registering 27 points, which was also 16 points ahead of the runner-up boat from Boston College.
"Winning my last regatta of the fall was really meaningful to me, as this was my first ever collegiate win!" said Williams. "This is something I have been working towards since my first year at Conn, and I am so happy to have shared this win with my skipper, Aili. She and I have become very close, and I think that helped us when communicating and motivating each other throughout the day."
Freshman
Anna Olsen (Falmouth, Mass.) and junior
Alexandra Wagner (Southport, Conn.) as well as junior
Harris Padegs (Buffalo, N.Y.) and sophomore
Margaret Benson (Wellesley, Mass.) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Freshmen
Fritz Baldauf (San Francisco, Calif.) and
Ashley Breyer (Middletown, R.I.), meanwhile, had another excellent performance out of the gates by placing sixth among 18 pairs. The first-year students also capped the unseasonably warm and sunny afternoon by winning the final race of the day.
"This fall has undoubtedly been unique, but we are very fortunate to have gotten to practice and race against Boston College twice," added Williams. "It has allowed us to have something to work toward, and our coach has reminded us from the start that this opportunity is special during these times."
