Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team fell to Amherst by a 3-1 decision on Friday evening at Orr Rink.
Connecticut College jumped on the board first at the 6:38 mark. Senior captain Ryan Petti (Tewksbury, Mass.) one-timed a pass from classmate Jacob Moreau (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec) from the high slot that hit off the glove of the Mammoth netminder and went over the goal line. Junior Brett Stirling (Aurora, Ontario) was also credited with an assist on the play.
Amherst (8-9-4, NESCAC 6-6-3), which is unbeaten in its last nine games dating back to registering a 3-0 triumph over the Camels back on Jan. 17, fought back and responded 10 minutes later. Patrick Daly forced a turnover and sent the puck behind the net to P.J. Conlon, who sent a no-look pass to Nick Bondra at the top of the crease for his second marker of the season.
The teams were tied heading into the first intermission, and the score remained that way until the 6:24 mark of the second stanza. The Mammoths took their first lead when Corey Goldstein ripped a shot from the top of the left circle which made its way past the blocker of Camel netminder Connor Rodericks (Buzzards Bay, Mass.).
The Camels appeared to net the equalizer while on a power play with 3:02 remaining in regulation. Sophomore Steven Senese (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) willed the puck over the goal line, but after a discussion among the officials, they determined that the play had been blown dead by a whistle before it crossed the line. Daly then put the game on ice by logging an empty netter with 53 seconds on the clock to give the hosts the two-goal win.
Giancarlo Ventre picked up the win between the pipes for Amherst by making 22 saves, while Rodericks was dealt the setback after turning away 31 shots.
Connecticut College (9-10-2, NESCAC 5-8-2) will look to remain in contention for a postseason berth when it visits Hamilton tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
