Men's Ice Hockey Drops Seesaw Matchup Against Tufts

Box Score

MALDEN, Mass. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team dropped a seesaw battle to Tufts by a 3-2 decision on Friday evening.

After winning the opening faceoff, Connecticut College possessed the puck in its offensive zone and scored just 1:22 into the contest. Junior Greg Pezza (Greenville, R.I.) took a pass from senior Jeff Thompson (Shelburne, Vt.) behind the goal and fired a shot from along the left boards that was saved by Jumbo netminder Drew Hotte. However, the puck trickled loose inside the crease, and sophomore Chris Adamsons (Portland, Conn.) was able to tuck it home inside the right post.

Despite surrendering an early goal, Tufts quickly regrouped and scored twice in a span of 3:25 to regain the lead by the midway point of the frame. Mason Babbidge evened the score at 7:16 by finishing a rebound, and Cory Gottfied beat Camel netminder Connor Rodericks (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) five-hole on a shot from the left point with the Jumbos on a power play. The Camels responded with under five minutes remaining in the high-scoring period when sophomore Steven Senese (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) potted his own rebound following an unsuccessful back-handed attempt, and the teams went into the intermission deadlocked at 2-2.

Tufts (7-11-1, NESCAC 5-7-1) changed its goalie after the Senese strike, and the decision proved to pay dividends. Sophomore Josh Carlo would stop every shot he saw for the remaining 44:25 of action, alllowing Angus Scott to find Justin Brandt for the game-winning marker with 14:01 remaining in the second period. The Camels had several chances to net the equalizer, especially after pulling Rodericks for an extra skater with 1:12 remaining, but a shot by senior Jacob Moreau (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec) hit the past, three additional attempts were saved by Sarlo, and captain Cooper Stahl blocked another in the final seconds to preserve the win for the Jumbos.

Carlo was credited with the victory by making 24 saves and not yielding a goal in over 40 minutes of action. Rodericks suffered the setback after making 26 stops.

Connecticut College (8-9-2, NESCAC 4-7-2) and Tufts will complete a home-and-home weekend series when the teams meet at Dayton Arena for the Camels' 9th Annual "Green Dot Game" tomorrow evening at 7 p.m.
