Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Ryan Petti (Tewksbury, Mass.) and sophomore Steven Senese (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) each found the back of the net twice to help lift the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team to a 5-1 triumph over Tufts in the program's 9th Annual "Green Dot Game" on Saturday evening at Dayton Arena.
After a quiet first period which did not feature any goal scoring or penalties assessed, the Camels opened the floodgates by scoring four times in the second frame. Petti put the hosts on the board by finishing a tic-tac-toe play from the left side with junior Paul Capozzi (Lake Forest, Ill.) and sophomore Anthony Quatieri (Peabody, Mass.) for a power play tally at 4:12 to spark the offense.
Following a five-minute major given to Jordan Haney for kneeing, the hosts capitalized again when Capozzi (Lake Forest, Ill.) found the back of the net in transition on a play that started in the team's defensive zone by Kyle Moss (Sutton, Mass.). The Camels doubled the lead at 5:43 and just 11 seconds after having an apparent goal scored by freshman Lukas Uhler (Upland, Calif.) for kneeing. Petti and Senese added markers just 53 seconds apart down the stretch, and the Camels ended the period with a 4-0 advantage after outshooting the Jumbos by a lopsided 18-2 margin in the frame.
Tufts (7-12-1, NESCAC 5-8-1) was finally able to get one past senior Connor Rodericks (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) in the third period to avoid being shut out when Peter Hatton scored his second marker of the winter at 12:09, but that was as close as they would come. Senese buried another puck into the back of the net with 2:58 remaining to seal the final outcome.
Rodericks earned the victory between the pipes by stopping 17 shots. Josh Sarlo made 34 saves in 58 minutes of action before being relieved at the very end following a Jumbo timeout with exactly two minutes left.
Connecticut College (9-9-2, NESCAC 5-7-2) will next look to avenge a loss to Amherst when it travels to the Pioneer Valley to face the Mammoths on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.
