No. 7 Trinity Rallies Past Field Hockey Despite Rodgers’ Two-Goal Performance

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team dropped a NESCAC matchup to No. 7 Trinity by a 4-2 score on Tuesday evening. The Camels scored the first two goals before the Bantams rallied from behind to pull out the win.

Trinity (9-2, NESCAC 5-2) dominated the opening quarter by outshooting the Camels, 8-0, having a 3-0 advantage in penalty corners, and maintaining possession. However, the visitors kept the match scoreless thanks to strong defense and got on the scoreboard first.

Following a give-and-go with Bridget Mason (East Greenwich, R.I.), sophomore Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) sent a short pass back to classmate Elektra Rodger that the sophomore finished by slipping the ball into the left corner of the cage just 51 seconds into the second frame.

The Camels stayed opportunistic and doubled their lead less than two minutes later on a penalty corner. Sophomore McKalynn Jacobsen (Fairfield, Conn.) sent a dangerous ball inside, and Rodger came through again by lifting the ball which was deflected into the cage.

Trinity, however, stormed back and first sliced the deficit in half on a second chance opportunity. Jackie Frank found the back of the cage in the 26th minute with Riley Nichols being credited with an assist. But despite getting outshot by a 9-3 margin, Connecticut College still found itself ahead by a goal at the recess.

The Bantams completed their rally in the second half with Frank leading the charge. The sophomore midfielder completed a natural hat trick by scoring goals in the third and fourth quarters.

Senior goalie Jackie Mountford (New London, N.H.) did everything she could to keep the Camels in the game, but it wasn't enough. The visitors only managed to tally three shots, and Caelin Flaherty capitalized on the Bantams' 13th penalty corner of the evening in the final minutes for insurance.

Olivia McMichael entered the second half in relief and was credited with the win without having to make a save for Trinity, which outshot the Camels by a 23-3 margin and had a 14-3 advantage in penalty corners. Mountford made five stops in the losing effort.

Connecticut College (1-9, NESCAC 0-7) will continue NESCAC action when it next visits Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m.
