PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Connecticut College men's soccer team was victorious on Tuesday afternoon in a nail-biter against non-conference foe Rhode Island College by a 2-1 score. The victory brings the Camels to 3-1 in non-conference contests this season.
Connecticut College sophomore
Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) put the Camels ahead early via an assist from freshman
Jack Kelesoglu (Westfield, N.J.) in the fifth minute. The first half was remarkably quiet following the score by Scoffone, as neither team converted their chances to score, each of them peppering the crossbar, and both goalies making key saves.
Rhode Island College (8-6, LEC 5-2) bridged the gap in the second half as Luis Blanco netted a goal in the 66th minute to tie the game at one apiece, getting past junior goalkeeper Sam Maidenburg (South Orange, N.J.) as he moved up to contest a shot. The game looked destined for overtime as the 1-1 score maintained throughout the rest of the second half until Connecticut College sophomore
Jordan Viotto (Morristown, N.J.) found the back of the net after receiving a pass from Scoffone with just under 30 seconds left in regulation to give the Camels a 2-1 lead.
Maidenburg totaled four saves in the win for the Camels while his goalkeeping counterpart Charlie Tashgian took the loss after saving five shots for the Anchormen. The Camels led in shots by a 20-11 margin as well as corner kicks by a total of 7-6.
Connecticut College (9-3, NESCAC 6-2) will return to New London and travel to neighboring Mitchell tomorrow for a non-conference matchup at 3:00 p.m.
