Women’s Soccer Drops Overtime Match To Trinity On A Penalty Kick

10/19/2021 8:32:00 PM

Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team fell to Trinity by a 2-1 decision on a golden goal that was scored on a penalty kick in the 98th minute on Tuesday evening.

Connecticut College dominated the first half by outshooting the Bantams, 8-3, and attempting all four of the corner kicks in the frame. However, the visitors were unable to get anything by goalkeeper Mariana Cournoyer. The Camels thought they might have earned a penalty kick in the first minute of play when a sprinting Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) was taken down in the box by Lexi Hasbrouck, but nothing was called on the play that happened just 50 seconds into the contest.

Trinity (7-5-1, NESCAC 3-4-1) had its first major scoring chance in the fourth minute of the second half. Tori Simas came bursting down the right side and fed the ball to Cassie Lee at the top of the box. Lee had saw a huge opening on the left side of the goal and fired a low shot, but sophomore Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) was able to make a diving save and redirect the ball wide of the goal.

The Bantams, however, stayed in control and capitalized just minutes later with Lee setting things up this time. Lee sent a short pass to Whitney Hoban, who rifled a low shot that was saved by Hall, and then finished her own rebound to make it 1-0 in the 51st minute.

The match itself settled down following massive pressure and a goal by the Bantams until the Camels got a golden opportunity to tie the match on a penalty kick. Johnson was elected to take the kick after senior Kat Norton (Hampton, Conn.) was tripped up, but her shot was saved by Cournoyer. An ensuing dangerous corner crossed in by junior Jackie Puda (Northbridge, Mass.) was also gobbled up by Cournoyer, and the Bantams dodged two bullets to stay ahead.

But with time winding down, the Camels got the equalizer they were looking for off the foot of Johnson with just 5:23 remaining in regulation. Sophomore Kristyn Moran (Hingham, Mass.) sent a long through ball from the backfield, and Johnson was able to finish with a tap to the bottom right corner of the net for her eighth marker of the season. The clutch goal sent the teams to overtime for the fourth straight meeting between the teams.

After Johnson nearly scored in the overtime session, Trinity had an even better opportunity when Dot Tilden was knocked down inside the box after receiving a pass from Seamus in transition. Hoban was given the opportunity to net the golden goal on a penalty kick, and she capitalized with 2:58 on the clock to end the match.

Cournoyer made four stops, including one on a penalty shot, to earn the win for Trinity. The Bantams were outshot 14-12, but they had a slight 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Hall made six saves in the setback for the Camels.

Connecticut College (8-2-2, NESCAC 5-2-1) will next visit UMass Dartmouth for a non-conference contest on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
