NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore
Emma Wheeler (Meredith, N.H.) registered a double-double in leading the Connecticut College volleyball team to a 3-1 comeback victory over Colby on Saturday afternoon at the Charles B. Luce Fieldhouse. After dropping the first set 25-23, the Camels won the next three frames by scores of 25-23, 25-23, and 25-19 to seal the win.
In a match which featured 30 ties and 14 lead changes, Colby got the upper hand by narrowly winning the first set. The Camels erased a 17-11 deficit by embarking on a 9-2 run and went ahead by getting consecutive aces from junior
Nicolette Marino (Verona, N.J.). However, the Mules were able to regain the lead following a timeout and clinched the set on a Camel attacking error.
The second set saw the teams tied seven times. However, the Camels were able to go ahead for good when freshman
Amanda Kreidler (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and Wheeler teamed up for a block to break a 16-16 deadlock. Connecticut College went ahead by as many as four and held on to win and even the match on a Mule attacking error.
The Camels completely seized the momentum by winning the third set by an identical 25-23 score, and it carried over to the fourth and final set. But after 12 mire times and five more exchanges of the lead, the hosts prevailed. A kill by junior
Katie Gunderman (Oakland, Calif.) made it 16-15 and gave her team a lead they would never surrender. Sophomore
Natasha Shrivastava (San Diego, Calif.) set up Wheeler for two kills down the stretch, allowing the Camels to escape with the win.
Wheeler finished with 16 kills and 20 digs to lead the way for Connecticut College. Senior
Avery Light (Sudbury, Mass.) had 12 kills, while Shrivastava contributed 36 assists and freshman
Julia Dailey (Charlottesville, Va.) had 38 digs. Junior
Christina Leduc (Mendon, Mass.) fell just shy of a double-double with nine kills and 15 digs, and Marino dropped five service aces.
Jenny Slaveck contributed 15 kills and eight digs to pace Colby (6-5, NESCAC 1-4). Morgan Selby and Susie Mueller combined for 31 assists while splitting setting duties, and Bella Schumacher had 26 digs. Samantha Schultz just missed a double-double with nine kills and 22 digs.
Connecticut College (3-5, NESCAC 1-4) will next visit Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
