NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior captain
Jackie Mountford (New London, N.H.) made 16 saves as the Connecticut College field hockey team fought hard but eventually fell to No. 3 Tufts, 6-0, on Monday evening.
The first quarter was dominated by the Jumbos. Connecticut College struggled to keep possession and was outshot by Tufts, 9-0, in the frame. Tufts (12-2, NESCAC 8-1) was able to jump out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Gillian Roeca and Kylie Rosenquest before the first period came to an end.
The Camels' defensive effort and offensive pressure was much more apparent in the second quarter, but a quick flurry of goals, including two coming from Roeca just nine seconds within each other, put the visitors in control. The Jumbos increased their lead to 5-0 by the end of the first half.
The second half was a much more even contest with both teams creating several scoring opportunities. In the 48th minute, Rosenquest scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Rachel Scrivanich.
The Camels were able to get five corners and four shots off in the second half, but the Jumbos' early lead proved to be too large a deficit to come back from.
Mountford tallied an impressive 16 saves in the loss for the Camels, while Tufts goalkeeper Sam Gibby played an aggressive game and stopped two shots in the second half. Starter Andie Stallman was credited with the win as the starter, and Roeca finished the game with a hat trick for the Jumbos.
Connecticut College (2-12, NESCAC 0-9) will travel to Wesleyan (6-8, NESCAC 2-7) on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for its final game of the season.
