Women’s Soccer Concludes Regular Season By Playing No. 13 Wesleyan To A 1-1 Tie

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team played No. 13 Wesleyan to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday afternoon at Citrin Field.

With the draw, and combined with Middlebury beating Williams by a 2-1 score, the Camels settled for the fifth seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament.

Battling through wet and windy conditions, the teams played a relatively even first half with Wesleyan narrowly outshooting the Camels, 9-7, and neither side gaining a golden scoring opportunity.

Wesleyan (12-1-1, NESCAC 8-1-1) earned the only corner kick of the half in the 39th minute, but a cross from Julia Meehan headed towards the top of the six-yard box and intended for Grace Devanny was unsuccessful. On the other end, a good look by senior Kat Norton (Hampton, Conn.) sailed wide right of the net.

After the match continued to stay scoreless well into the second half, the teams exchanged goals within a span of 46 seconds. Connecticut College got on the board first in the 76th minute on a free kick taken by senior Marielle McEnaney (Orleans, Mass.) from 35 yards out. The captain floated a ball into the box that bounced off a player from each side, and Johnson was able to win it through traffic and punch it home.

The Cardinals, however, had an immediate response to tie the match and eventually force overtime. Following a throw-in by Meehan, Devanny took the ball down the right side and sent in a cross that was one-touched in by Audrey Lavey.

The Camels tried to put the match away in the fourth minute of overtime when they earned a corner kick opportunity from the left side. Sophomore Kristyn Moran (Hingham, Mass.) sent in a perfectly placed cross which Norton tried to finish from the back post, but her one timer sailed high and wide of the net. Neither side could get any good looks in the second overtime frame, and the teams settled for the draw.

Sarah Hammond made eight saves for Wesleyan, which had a 19-18 edge in total shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks, while Camel sophomore Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) stopped six on the other end.

As the fifth seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament, Connecticut College (9-3-3, NESCAC 5-3-2) will begin postseason action when it travels to face fourth-seeded Middlebury on Saturday, Oct. 30 at a time to be determined.
