NEW LONDON, Conn. –
Jackie Mountford (New London, N.H.) made 17 saves and stopped a penalty stroke on her Senior Day, but the Connecticut College field hockey team was dealt a 7-2 setback by No. 9 Williams on Sunday afternoon.
The Ephs scored seven unanswered goals in the first three quarters, giving themselves more than enough insurance to hold off a late charge by the hosts. Catherine Torres and Shea van den Broek scored 40 seconds apart in the opening minutes to set the tone. Even though Mountford stopped a penalty stroke taken by Torres with a diving stick save in the seventh minute, it could not kill the Ephs' momentum.
Williams (8-2, NESCAC 3-2) got second markers from Torres and van der Broek along with a buzzer-beating shot by Liz Scarella to end the half to give themselves more than enough of a cushion to pull out the win. The Camels tried to come back and got second-half markers from sophomores
Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) and
Elektra Rodger (Greenwich, Conn.), but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Carson Stephenson was credited with the win without having to make a save during the first half for Williams. Gates Tenerowicz made one stop in the second half, as the Ephs outshot the Camels by a 31-7 margin and had a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners. Mountford's 17 save effort was among the best of her career after being recognized prior to the game along with classmates
Colleen Raftery (Dover, Mass.) and
Logan Kilfoyle (Plymouth, N.H.).
Connecticut College (1-7, NESCAC 0-6) will next host Roger Williams for a non-conference tilt on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
