NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore
McKalynn Jacobsen (Fairfield, Conn.) scored her first goal of the season as the Connecticut College field hockey team lost a defensive battle to Roger Williams, 3-1, on Wednesday night at Silfen Field.
The first goal of the game came early on when Hannah Palmer struck the ball off a deflection from her teammate Hannah Gaffney's shot on goal. Roger Williams (6-4) continued to control the first period while testing the Camels defense with several scoring opportunities while making it difficult for the hosts to cross midfield.
During the second quarter the Camels put more heat on the Hawks defense, controlling possession for the majority of the period. Despite the Camels' intensified offensive pressure, the Roger Williams defensive line was able to keep Connecticut College (1-8) off the scoreboard and finish the half with a 1-0 lead.
The Camels evened the score at 1-1 three minutes into the second half. The shot came from Jacobsen off an assist by freshman
Rowan Galanis (Ipswich, Mass.). The Hawks countered quickly by regaining the lead at 2-1 with a goal from Gaffney just 30 seconds after Jacobsen's goal.
The defensive showdown continued into the final 15 minutes of the game. Both teams pushed to score, but the Camels were only able to get off three shots while the Hawks managed just four. Roger Williams eventually extended its lead to 3-1 and solidified the win with a goal from Cate Delaney with eight minutes left to play.
Connecticut College goalkeeper
Jackie Mountford (New London, N.H.) was able to stop 10 shots and
Colleen Raftery (Dover, Mass.) made a defensive save. Roger Williams goalkeeper Callie Flanagan made 10 saves in the win for the Hawks as well.
The Camels will travel to Hartford next Tuesday to take on Trinity College at 6 p.m.
