Women’s Soccer Concludes Season With 2-1 Loss Against Geneseo State In Opening Round Of NCAA Tournament

By Johnny Alexandre '22

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Connecticut College fell by a score of 2-1 to Geneseo State in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at the University of Scranton's Weiss Field on Saturday afternoon.

With the Camels attacking forward in the sixth minute, senior captain Emily Lorry (Lower Merion, Pa.) received a cross pass from her teammate Hannah Boldt (North Kingstown, R.I.). Without taking a touch to control the ball, Lorry fired a shot on net that the Geneseo State goalie, Angel Bennett, was unable to handle. The ball slipped into the back of the net for the early 1-0 Camel lead.

The Camels had plenty more scoring opportunities in the first half, including a 35-yard free-kick attempt by Kristyn Moran (Hingham, Mass.) that railed off the crossbar, but it was Geneseo State (16-2-1) which would score the only other goal of the half, late in the 44th minute. Geneseo State's Haylee Evertsen set up teammate Juliette Frischmann, who tapped in the long free-kick pass that got past Conn goalkeeper Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Oregon) to tie the score at 1-1.

In the 52nd minute Connecticut College (9-5-3) nearly scored when Claire Williams (Portsmouth, R.I.) received a big cross inside the Geneseo State 18-yard box. Williams struck the ball, without taking a touch, as well as she could have towards the bottom right corner of the net but Geneseo State's Bennett was there to make the diving save.

On another strong opportunity, Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.), in the 62nd minute, received the corner kick pass on the near side of the field, took a touch, and unleashed a curling shot that just went over the Geneseo State net.

In the 78th minute, Geneseo was able to capitalize on a pretty sequence of passes, leading Frischmann into the 18-yard box with the ball, where she was able to, at the last second, shoot past Conn goalie Hall for the score and give her team a 2-1 lead.

Despite Connecticut College leading in shots, 15-11, shots on goal, 10-6, and being tied for corners 4-4, the Camels were never able to score a second goal, and the game ended with Geneseo State victorious. Hall made four saves, while Bennett stopped eight shots to earn the victory.

The Camels will graduate five seniors and look forward to welcoming back more than 20 letterwinners next season.
