Men’s Ice Hockey Commences Season At Home With Setback Against No. 11 Trinity

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team fell to No. 11 Trinity by a 5-1 score in the season opener for both programs on Friday evening at Dayton Arena.

After a scoreless first period filled with opportunities for both sides, Connecticut College opened the scoring just 35 seconds into the second frame by capitalizing on a 5-on-3 advantage. Beginning the period playing two men up for at least 62 seconds, junior Anthony Quatieri (Peabody, Mass.) put the Camels on the board by finishing a tic-tac-toe play with assists coming from senior Paul Capozzi (Lake Forest, Ill.) and classmate Eric Fournier (Lethbridge, Alberta).

Trinity, however, had a quick answer at the 2:49 mark after the Camels nearly doubled their lead at the other end. Lucas Michaud knotted the score on a quick transition, and then Jax Murray put the Bantams ahead for the first time at 13:50 by taking a loose puck in the Bantams' defensive end and going coast to coast.

The visitors then used the momentum they gained in the second to add three insurance markers in the third. After Devan Tongue made it 3-1 at 7:23, Murray and Gerrard Merretta caged power play goals to seal the final outcome.

J.P. Mella made 24 saves to earn the victory between the pipes for Trinity (1-0, NESCAC 1-0), which ended the game with a 34-25 advantage in shots. Mike McHale (Needham, Mass.), who was making his first start as a Camel, took the loss after making 29 stops.

Connecticut College (0-1, NESCAC 0-1) will remain at home to face Wesleyan tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
