Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team concluded its opening weekend of action with a 5-1 loss against Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Dayton Arena.
Â
Wesleyan (1-0-1, NESCAC 1-0-1) took full advantage of its first power play opportunities of the game to quickly take a 2-0 advantage, which began with some puck luck. After dumping the puck and seeing it take an unconventional bounce off the boards, Kyle Anderson potted the first marker at 5:43 by finishing a chip from Colin Cobb. The Cardinals then went on another power play and scored just nine seconds into it, as Emmet Powell fed Matt Zandi from the center area of the blue line to double the margin.
Â
The Camels had their best opportunity to slice the deficit in half midway through the second period when captain
Kyle Shero (Westwood, Mass.) stole the puck in the neutral zone and found
Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.) for a breakaway opportunity. Stadheim had his point-blank look stopped by Erik Voloshin, and even though he collected his own rebound, the ensuing rebound headed for the top shelf was somehow also snagged by the Cardinal netminder at 9:02.
Â
Shortly afterwards, Wesleyan's Colin Cobb allowed the visitors to completely keep the momentum by firing home the team's third goal. Go Uemera won the puck along the boards and found Cobb, who rocketed it home from the top of the slot to make it 3-0.
Â
In the third period, Connecticut College (0-2) came to life and was able to get one back in the 12th minute of action when sophomore
Sean Detloff (Harrison Township, Mich.) lifted a shot from the left point that was redirected home by freshman
Will Winship (Andover, Mass.). Both players also recorded their first collegiate point on the play, but that was as close as the Camels would come. Cobb and Tiger Bjornlund netted insurance markers late in the third, and the Cardinals ended the weekend unbeaten.
Â
Voloshin turned away 19 shots to pick up the victory for Wesleyan, while Camel sophomore
Sean Dynan (Reading, Mass.) made 18 saves in the loss.
Â
Connecticut College will face another challenging opponent next in Brockport State when the team travels to Skidmore College in the Capital Region of New York for a Thanksgiving Weekend tournament which also includes Chatham and the host institution. The two teams will face off on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 5 p.m.
