Men’s Ice Hockey Edged By Host Skidmore, 1-0, In Thanksgiving Invitational Championship Game

By Johnny Alexandre '22

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team was edged by the host Skidmore Thoroughbreds by a 1-0 score in the championship game of the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational on Sunday.

The first period of play was physical and the physical play resulted in each team committing their own fair share of penalties. Despite there being 12 total penalty minutes between the two teams in the first period, neither side was able to capitalize on power plays and the game remained scoreless.

The second period was also scoreless, with Connecticut College creating more quality scoring chances for themselves, including a couple of breakaways.

It wasn't until there was about five minutes left in the third period that Skidmore (4-3-1) scored the first goal of the game, shooting the puck towards a virtually empty net after goaltender Michael McHale (Needham, Mass) was forced out of position by a scuffle in front of the net. The referees took their time deliberating after the score to see if McHale had been interfered with, but it was ultimately ruled a fair goal by Will Dow-Kenny, and Skidmore (4-3-1) took the late 1-0 lead.

Jake Vaughan (Colorado Springs, Colo.) found himself receiving a pass just in front of the Skidmore net with about a minute and a half to go, but the shot went wide, and the Camels were unable to equalize before the end of the game.

Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.) and Robert Radochia (Woburn, Mass.) received all-tournament honors for their excellent play throughout the two-day tournament for the Camels, while Skidmore's Reid Russell was named the most valuable player and was among three Thoroughbreds recognized.

Between the posts, Tate Brandon made 25 saves to earn the shutout for Skidmore while the Camels' McHale turned away 24 shots in the setback.

Connecticut College (1-3) will next face off against Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. on Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.
