NEW LONDON, Conn. – With nine different players in the scoring column, the Connecticut College men's basketball team displayed its offensive firepower with its highest scoring output of the season in an 83-62 victory against crosstown rival Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon.
Fresh off a commanding 19-point road win versus Johnson and Wales and looking to maintain their dominant play, the Camels set the tone early. Led by the tandem of sophomore guard
Jarron Flynn's (Roslindale, Mass.) efficient 14 first-half points on 6-of-7 shooting and freshman Ryan Bank's dominance on the glass, hauling in seven first-half rebounds, the Camels took a 12-point lead into the break.
Coming out of the locker room the Camels looked to widen their lead, but the resiliency of the Mariners made that no easy task. After watching the Mariners trim the Camels lead to just two baskets in the early minutes of the second half, the Camels turned to the bench where sophomore guard
Billy Whelan (Hamilton, Mass.) poured in three of the team's four second-half three-pointers and 14 second-half points. Freshman guard
Caelin Peters (King of Prussia, Pa.) continued to create for others, tallying another three assists and setting the game high of six.
Sophomore forward
Ben Rice (Hanson, Mass.) joined his classmates Flynn and Whelan in the double-digit scoring category, as he registered his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Flynn and Whelan finished with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
Despite receiving double-digit scoring contributions from three of their five starters, the Mariners struggled to overcome the Camels' suffocating zone defense.
Led by Flynn's three steals, the Camels forced 16 turnovers en route to holding the Mariners just one point shy of their season low in scoring.
Now sitting at 4-4, the Camels will look to break .500 in their final game of the semester when they host the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m.
