Women’s Ice Hockey Settles For 2-2 Tie With Worcester State

By Johnny Alexandre '22

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team played the Worcester State Lancers to a 2-2 overtime tie at Worcester Ice Rink on Friday evening.

The first period came and went without a goal. Connecticut College committed one penalty in the first period, but the Camels were able to kill it off. Worcester State goalie Amber Lee was tested early on, facing nine first-period shots, but was able to stop them all.

With about six minutes to go in the second period, following a Carly Denora (Verona, N.J.) save, Connecticut College's Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) picked up the puck and started accelerating towards the Worcester zone. Outpaced slightly by her teammate Camille Phelan (Medfield, Mass.), Conca pushed the puck forward to the skating Phelan, who went ahead on the breakaway and was able to put the puck past Worcester's Lee for the first score of the game and the 1-0 lead.

Minutes later, Connecticut College's aggressive forecheck forced a turnover in the neutral zone. Conca, who came up with the puck, passed it ahead to her teammate Caroline O'Keefe (Winthrop, Mass.), who advanced into the Worcester State zone. O'Keefe patiently waited for the rushing Conca to crash the net and fed her a great pass, across the ice, which beat the Worcester State goalie Lee for the second goal of the game and the 2-0 lead.

The period wouldn't end though before Worcester State (5-2-2), with under a minute left, did well passing the puck, spreading the ice, and feeding the Lancers Cassidhe Wozniak cross-crease for the goal to tighten the score at 2-1.

The lead would hold until about halfway through the third period when a rebound got loose just in front of the Connecticut College net. With Denora out of position, Worcester State's Clare Conway was able to take the puck and score, tying the game at 2-2. The tied score would hold for the remainder of the third period, and the game would head to overtime.

In an overtime period that only allows each team three skaters on the ice at a time, not including goalies, both teams had to be careful as to not allow a breakaway. Despite Connecticut College being assessed a penalty in the overtime period and having to play a player down, the game would end without another score.

Connecticut College (1-4-1) registered 40 shots to Worcester State's 23. The Camels' Denora made 21 saves while Worcester State's Lee registered 38 saves.

The Camels will next face off against UMass Boston at home on Tuesday, Dec. 7th at 7 p.m.
