PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman
Andrew Hartel (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored a career-best 20 points and came just shy of a double-double in leading the Connecticut College men's basketball team to a dominating 73-54 road victory over Johnson & Wales on Wednesday evening.
The first half started as a seesaw battle with two ties and four lead changes. But after Tim Deng tied it at 18s at the midway point, freshman
Cam Schainfeld (Newton, Mass.) nailed a jumper sparked a 20-0 run and ended the half on a 22-2 hot streak. Schainfeld also drilled a 3-pointer to cap the 20 unanswered with two minutes remaining, and a layup by Hartel gave the Camels a 40-20 advantage at the break.
Connecticut College (3-4), which shot 59 percent from the floor overall and 42 percent from beyond the arc in the first half, unfortunately came out cold in the next frame. The Wildcats responded in a big way with a 19-3 run over a six-minute span and only allowed the Camels to score at the free throw line. Following a 3-point play the old-fashioned way by Tyreek Jones which made it 43-39, sophomore
Jarron Flynn (Roslindale, Mass.) hit the visitors' first field goal of the second half with 13:47 left to try to get the Camels going again.
Despite nearly surrendering what was initially a huge lead, Connecticut College never surrendered it and responded with an 11-1 run which began with Flynn's bucket. The margin ballooned back to 20 on a Hartel 3-pointer which made it 65-45 with 5:57 remaining, and the Wildcats would never be able to recover.
In addition to scoring 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor, Hartel grabbed eight rebounds, dished out three assists, and recorded two steals to lead the way for the Camels. Flynn added 19 points, and Schainfeld finished with 17 points and six assists.
Josh Zangerle paced Johnson & Wales (1-4) with 19 points and five rebounds, while Deng added 11 points for the hosts. Bryan Davis posted double-digit rebounds with 10 and also contributed four points and three assists.
