NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team played Becker College to a 4-4 draw on Friday evening at Dayton Arena.
After a scoreless opening frame which featured scoring opportunities for both sides, Connecticut College broke loose by scoring three power play goals in the second period. Senior captain
Matt Creamer (Warwick, R.I.) set up sophomore Brett Mocchia (Lake Forest, Ill.) and junior
Steven Senese (Niagara Falls, N.Y.), and junior
Peter Scheschareg (Arlington, Mass.) netted his first collegiate goal with 1:05 on the clock.
Becker, however, responded in a big way by netting four unanswered in the third period. Tristian Mock most notably scored twice, beginning with stealing the puck from the Camel blue liners and skating in all alone on a breakaway against freshman
Sean Dynan (Reading, Mass.) at 4:26 before scoring again six minutes later.
The Hawks seized the lead just 13 seconds after netting the equalizer by capitalizing on a possible icing play that was waived off. Joshua Sanchez collected the puck behind the net after it was cleared away and found Colby Audette on the right side.
Despite surrendering a three-goal lead, the Camels fought back and netted an equalizer to force overtime with just 3:29 left on the clock. Starting from behind his own net, junior
Colin McCabe (Pembroke, Mass.) went coast-to-coast and fed junior
Chris Adamsons (Portland, Conn.) from behind the Hawks' net to make it 4-4.
The teams then played a 3-on-3 overtime session to try and decide a winner, but nothing could get past the goalies even though the hosts had several chances. Creamer fired a wrister from inside the slot that clinked off the post with 50 seconds remaining, and a blocked shot by McCabe defensively led to a 2-on-1 break in the final seconds for the Camels. Senese got an excellent look on the right side off a feed from Creamer, but Andrew LoRusso came away with a huge save to end the rollercoaster matchup in a tie.
Dynan turned away 23 shots for Connecticut College, while Becker's LoRusso came away with 46 saves and 21 in the third period alone.
Connecticut College (2-0-1) and Becker (1-4-1) face off again to settle the score tomorrow afternoon the Worcester Ice Center at 4:40 p.m.
