Men’s Basketball Drops First Matchup At Sarah Lawrence

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team fell to Sarah Lawrence by a 66-52 decision on Saturday afternoon at Noyes Court.

Connecticut College (1-3), which only dressed eight players, kept the game tight in the early going. Neither side led by more than four until Omar Jamaleddine, who netted his 1,000th career point in the contest, finished a pass from Liam Barry to make it 20-14 with 7:37 remaining in the first half. The Camels kept it close, tying the game on a 3-pointer by freshman Billy Whelan (Hamilton, Mass.) and taking a 27-26 lead on a free throw off the hands of senior Jeff Allen (Madison, Conn.), but it was the Gryphons who ended up having the advantage at the break by getting a trey from Jamaleddine at the other end.

The Camels evened the score when freshman David Murray (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) put back a missed 3-pointer. However, the hosts would take over from there. Despite being challenged by the visitors, Sarah Lawrence extended their lead to twin figures at 53-43 on a made 3-pointer by Chris Torres and added to it before the final buzzer.

Jamaleddine poured in 22 points to lead the way for Sarah Lawrence (1-0), which was playing its first game of the season. Justin Bailey added 20 on 80 percent shooting, and Enike Anyia grabbed 14 boards.

Allen scored 17 points and corralled seven boards to pace Connecticut College, while freshman Jarron Flynn (Roslindale, Mass.) contributed 14 points. Freshman Ben Rice (Hanson, Mass.) finished with nine rebounds in 40 minutes of action, and Murray blocked three shots.

"We took a step back in terms of our competitiveness and attention to detail in some key areas," said head coach Tim Sweeney. "Tomorrow is a chance to bounce back and see what kind of fight this team has within it."
