Men’s Basketball Finishes Weekend With 57-49 Loss Against Sarah Lawrence

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team was dealt a 57-49 setback by Sarah Lawrence to complete a two-game weekend series at Noyes Court on Sunday afternoon.

The Camels, who dressed just eight players for the second time in as many days, remained competitive throughout a first half which featured three ties and three lead changes. Finding themselves trailing 5-2 in the early stages, freshman Henry Fine (Newton, Mass.) ignited a 16-2 run for the visitors by hitting back-to-back 3-pointers at 16:38 and 15:03. Classmate David Murray (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) finished a pass from senior Jeff Allen to cap the hot streak and make it 18-7 at the midway point.

Sarah Lawrence, however, came back with a run of its own and ended the half by scoring 19 of the game's next 21 points. Lucas Murray converted a layup to allow the hosts to regain the lead at 19-18, and the Gryphons carried a 26-20 advantage into recess.

The game continued as a seesaw battle throughout the second half. Freshman Ben Rice (Hanson, Mass.) canned a 3-pointer to quickly make it a one-possession game, and the Camels got back over the hump and retook the lead at 35-34 when classmate Jarron Flynn (Roslindale, Mass.) converted a free throw with 12:09 left. With less than eight minutes remaining, all eight players dressed had contributed between three and six points apiece to fuel a balanced scoring attack.

However, the Gryphons were able to keep the Camels off the scoreboard for nearly a five-minute stretch and were able to break away. Omar Jamaleddine, who eclipsed 1,000 career points yesterday, and Enike Anyia contributed four apiece in the final minutes to allow the hosts to sweep the weekend series.

Jamaleddine led the way again for Sarah Lawrence (2-0) with a 13-point effort. He also finished with seven rebounds and four steals. Isaiah Pean netted nine points, and Anyia had eight points, four rebounds, and three assists.

Connecticut College (1-4) was paced by Murray and Flynn. Murray came just shy of a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds, while Flynn contributed 10 points, five steals, and was among four Camels to dish out three assists. Ryan Omslaer (Jackson, N.J.) continued to show improvement by scoring six points on perfect shooting the floor and also grabbing seven boards.

"Our defensive effort and intensity were much improved today," said head coach Tim Sweeney. "We had chances to fold and we did not. Self-inflicted turnovers continue to be a problem for us, and we must use this week to continue getting better."
