NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman
Casey Godfrey (Redondo Beach, Calif.) scored her first collegiate goal and was among four Camels to find the back of the net as the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team blanked Salve Regina, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Dayton Arena.
Connecticut College (3-0) opened the scoring at the tail end of a 5-on-3 situation playing shorthanded. Senior
Erin Dillon (Hazlet, N.J.) stole the puck away at center ice and raced across the left boards before being greeted by three Seahawk defenders. Dillon was still able to knock the puck loose to classmate
Mairi Anthony (Stoneham, Mass.), who then found the elite scorer for the opening goal of the game with 1:58 on the clock.
The Camels doubled their lead early in the second in similar fashion by winning the puck through traffic against the half wall. Junior captain kept the puck in the team's offensive zone and found a cutting
Natalie Witkowski (Cheshire, Conn.) on the left side, who fired a one-timer past Sophie Beauchesne at the 2:26 mark. Sophomore
Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) then made it 3-0 in the final minute of the frame by winning the puck through traffic just outside the crease after a hard shot from inside the slot by senior
Caitlyn Wilkin (Barre, Vt.) could not be handled by the Seahawk netminder.
The hosts fired seven shots on target in the third period against backup goalie Madison Jalbert and sealed the final outcome 3:58 into the frame. Freshman
Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) forced a turnover at the bottom of the right circle and sent a pass to Godfrey, who finished with a shot to the upper 90.
Sophomores
Abby Wieczorek (Winntetka, Ill.) and
MJ Peters (El Granada, Calif.) combined for the shutout for Connecticut College, which outshot its opponent by a 41-19 margin. Wieczorek earned the win by making 15 saves, and Peters registered four shots in relief. Beauchesne suffered the loss for Salve Regina (0-1), which was playing its first game of the season, despite recording 30 saves in less than 40 minutes of action.
