Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Ice Hockey Downs Perennial Power Norwich, 2-1, In Battle Between Unbeaten Teams On Senior Day

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Matt Creamer (Warwick, R.I.) and freshman Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.) each found the back of the net as the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team earned a thrilling 2-1 victory over Norwich on Saturday afternoon at Dayton Arena.

The Camels, who recognized their six-member senior class prior to the contest, got on the board on their second power play of the period. Sophomore Kyle Shero (Westwood, Mass.) won a faceoff from the left dot that was collected by Creamer, who fired a laser past Cadet netminder Landon Pavlisin at 12:34. Shero was credited with an assist on the play.

Following a scoreless second period which saw the Cadets outshoot the Camels by a 12-7 margin, the hosts doubled their lead in the waning minutes of the third period. Colin McCabe won the puck through traffic in the team's defensive zone in front of the right dot and poked it ahead to Stadheim, who raced in on a breakaway opportunity and finished with a backhanded shot which sent the Camel bench into jubilation with 3:40 remaining.

Norwich (5-1), which outshot the hosts 10-5 in the final frame, did not go away quietly and continued to threaten at the other end. After the Camels called a timeout with 1:53 remaining to reset, the Cadets pulled their goalie for an extra skater and capitalized to slice the lead in half with just 1:03 remaining. Senior Greg Pezza (Greenville, R.I.) successfully blocked a shot from the right point which was taken by Alex Monteleone, but Scott Swanson was able to win the puck and send it home to make it a one-goal game.

Pavlisin left the net again once the Cadets regained possession in an opportunity for the visitors to tie the game with under a minute left. However, the Camel defense which blocked 16 shots in the game held its ground. Freshman Cam Fernandez (Fairfield, Conn.) saved a shot attempt by Logan vande Meerakker, and McCabe and Sam Stone (Middleton, Mass.) blocked back-to-back shots to allow the Camels to survive and earn the 2-1 victory.

Fernandez made 27 saves to earn the victory for Connecticut College, which was outshot by a 28-21 margin and avenged a 6-2 exhibition loss to the Cadets earlier this season in Vermont. Pavlisin stopped 19 shots in the losing effort.
