Trinity Holds Off Men's Ice Hockey in Special Teams Battle At Dayton Arena

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Kyle Shero (Westwood, Mass.) scored two power play goals, but it wasn't enough, as the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team fell to Trinity in an exhibition matchup by a 4-3 score on Saturday afternoon at Dayton Arena.

Beginning with a Shero strike, the first three goals of the game were all scored in 5-on-3 situations. Shero put the Camels on the board first when he redirected in the rebound off an initial shot taken from just in front of the blue line by senior Matt Creamer (Warwick, R.I.). Brett Stirling (Aurora, Ontario), another senior captain, was also credited with an assist on the play that occurred at 11:08 of the first.

Trinity, however, responded with four unanswered goals in the second period alone to take control. After the Camels were issued three penalties in less than two minutes and playing down two players, Eric Sinson and John Campomenosi scored just 40 seconds apart to give the Bantams the lead in the opening minutes before Jericho Petkovich and Lucas Michaud netted insurance markers in a span of 1:48.

Connecticut College then came back with a pair of goals in a short timeframe to make it a game again in the third period. Junior Colin McCabe (Pembroke, Mass.) first capitalized from the left corner on a delayed penalty call at 5:41, and Shero slashed the deficit down to one from almost the same spot with the Camels on an ensuing power play less than a minute later.

The hosts appeared to tie the game at 4-4 with 7:11 left in regulation when Brett Moccia (Lake Forest, Ill.) beat the Trinity goalie on a breakaway that was started by freshman Sean Detloff (Harrison Township, Mich.), but the goal was called back. J.P. Mella made six more saves down the stretch, and the Bantams held on for the win.

Mella earned the win between the pipes for Trinity by turning away 27 shots, while freshman Cam Fernandez made 23 stops for Connecticut College.

Trinity and Connecticut College will complete a home-and-home exhibition series in Hartford at 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
