NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior captain
Matt Creamer (Warwick, R.I.) found the back of the net twice in leading the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team to a convincing 6-2 victory over Albertus Magnus on Saturday afternoon at Dayton Arena.
The Camel men's ice hockey program was the school's first NESCAC team to play a home game since women's lacrosse hosted Middlebury nearly a year ago on March 7, 2020. They are also the first NESCAC men's ice hockey team to compete in a countable game this winter.
The Camels took advantage of an early penalty by Albertus Magnus (0-1), as Creamer received a pass in transition from fellow senior captain
Brett Stirling (Aurora, Ontario) and finished by driving past the defense on the left side.
Even though Albertus Magnus (0-1) tied it at the midway point, sophomore
Brett Moccia (Lake Forest, Ill.) broke the deadlock for good by driving in from the right side and finishing his own rebound at 14:49. The goal sparked a streak of five unanswered, which was capped by a Creamer tally in the third when the captain potted a give-and-go from junior
Steven Senese (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) on a 2-on-1 opportunity with 8:13 remaining in regulation.
Freshman
Sean Dynan (Reading, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate victory between the pipes by making 29 saves for Connecticut College (1-0), which also had three players –
Tim Kobler (Merlischachen, Switzerland),
Eric Fournier (Lethbridge, Alberta), and
Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.) – record their first collegiate goal. Albertus Magnus' Logan Bateman suffered the loss for allowing all six goals in nearly 52 minutes of action. He still stopped 26 shots.
Connecticut College and Albertus Magnus will complete a home-and-home series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in New Haven.
