NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior
Jeff Allen (Madison, Conn.) and freshman
Ben Rice (Hanson, Mass.) each registered a double-double in leading the Connecticut College men's basketball team to a convincing 76-43 victory over Mitchell College at the Yarnall Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Camels, who picked up their first win of the season, scored the first eight points and burst out to earn a commanding 15-2 lead in the first seven minutes of the contest. Freshman
David Murray converted layups on the team's first two possessions, and Allen capped the run with a layup of his own following a steal by freshman
Henry Fine (Newton, Mass.). The visitors extended to their lead to as many as 17 twice in the frame and held a 33-16 advantage at recess.
Connecticut College (1-2) came out strong in the second half as well and never let up. Freshman
Billy Whelan (Hamilton, Mass.) stole the ball away from Jalen Benson and found classmate
Jarron Flynn (Roslindale, Mass.) to continue to set the tone in a contest the Camels led from wire-to-wire. The margin ballooned to as many as 44 when Flynn swiped the ball away and drove in for a layup to make it 67-23 with 8:40 remaining, and the Mariners never even came within 30 the rest of the way.
The Camels were led by the double-double efforts of Allen and Rice. Allen, who shot 9-of-13 from the floor, finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Rice had 13 points and 10 boards to go along with six steals and two blocks. Murray ended the game with 12 points and seven boards, and junior
Ryan Omslaer (Jackson, N.J.) had a career-best performance with eight points, 10 rebounds, and six blocked shots.
Mitchell (0-3) got strong contributions from Jacob Tully and Julius Hemingway. Tully recorded a team-high 13 points, while Hemingway finished with seven points and seven rebounds. He also redirected to shots.
"We have been raising the standard for how we want to compete each day in practice, and it was nice to see the progress from last week to this week," said head coach
Tim Sweeney. "The guys are responding to challenges, and we will look to continue that this week."
