Women’s Ice Hockey Rallies Late To Cruise Past Becker, 6-2, And Complete Weekend Sweep

WORCESTER, Mass. – Seniors Mairi Anthony (Stoneham, Mass.) and Erin Dillon (Hazlet, N.J.) each scored twice in the third period in leading the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team to a dominating 6-2 victory over Becker at the Worcester Ice Center on Sunday afternoon. The Camels rallied from two goals by exploding to score five times in the third period alone to complete a weekend sweep over the Hawks.

Connecticut College (2-0) dominated the game out of the gates and attempted six shots on target while Clare Conway was serving an early penalty for holding. However, nothing could get by netminder Maddy Morgan.

The tide then quickly turned in favor of Becker (3-5) when Conway intercepted a pass on a forecheck and immediately fired the puck over the shoulder of Camel junior Carly Denora (Verona, N.J.) to put the Hawks on the scoreboard first at 4:32. Becker seized the early momentum from there and doubled the margin less than two minutes later, as Shelby Reaugh weaved her way through several defenders before finishing.

Despite falling behind, Connecticut College stormed back and ended the game with six unanswered goals during the final 40 minutes of action. Senior Caitlyn Wilkin (Barre, Vt.) opened the scoring when she won the puck through a dogpile of players from both sides following a shot by sophomore Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) that was initially saved at the 14:20 mark in the second.

The Camels then completed the rally with five markers in the third period. Dillon and Anthony scored just 32 seconds apart in the second minute of the frame to give the visitors the lead, and the Camels added three more tallies in a short span during the second half of the frame to pull away. Anthony set up Dillon to make it 5-2 at 14:43 and then sealed the outcome by finishing passes from juniors Samantha Hunt (Savage, Minn.) and Kaaren Liston (Houghton, Mich.).

"The team worked hard in the first two periods, but we were not playing consistent and hard-nosed Connecticut College hockey," said head coach Kristin Steele. "In the third period, we committed to taking away time and space from our opponent, which allowed us to turn the puck over and transition quickly. Credit the Becker team for putting the pressure on early. It took a whole team effort for us to battle back."

Denora picked up her first win of the season between the pipes with 22 saves for Connecticut College, which outshot the Hawks by a 31-24 margin. Morgan stopped 25 shots in the losing effort for Becker.

"Having the chance to play two games this weekend was exciting, and we are grateful for the extra work everyone has put in to allow us to reach this point," added Steele. "This was certainly a good weekend overall to build on."
