Women’s Soccer Edged By Pace, 2-1, In Road Matchup

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team dropped an exhibition matchup to Pace University, which competes at the NCAA Division II level, on the road by a 2-1 decision on Sunday afternoon.

"Although disappointed in the result, we now have some things to focus on for the week ahead," said head coach Norm Riker. "We are thankful for the opportunity to be able to play and appreciative of Pace University and Coach Winn for hosting. Also, we are grateful for the work of Mo White, Matt Mancini, and the training room staff to make this all happen."

The Camels had the first major opportunity to score when they were awarded a penalty kick 15 minutes into the match, but they were unable to capitalize. Shortly afterwards, the Setters found the back of the net to quickly swing the momentum their way.

Connecticut College, however, got a late goal in the first half to knot up the score on a play that involved as many as six players. Sophomore Mary Parse (Orange, Mass.) sent the ball through the right side to junior Sarah Moore (Harvard, Mass.) for a shot that was saved by the Setter goalkeeper, and sophomore Alexa Blaney (South Hadley, Mass.) was in the right place to finish the rebound on a wide open net.

Unfortunately for the Camels, a miscue in the team's back defensive third led to a Setter goal shortly afterwards. The hosts took the 2-1 advantage into the recess and held on for the victory despite having to compete down a player for the last 30 minutes.

"We played a high-level team that had a lot of skill," added sophomore Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.), who was one of several players who helped set up the Camel goal. "Not playing a team of that caliber [in a long time] definitely had us in shock for the start, but we rose to the occasion and met their intensity at the end. There were a lot of good things we accomplished, and playing this team showed us what we have to work on in preparation for our next NESCAC season."
