Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Downs Wesleyan, 2-0, To Conclude Spring Season

By Jenna Whelan '22

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomores Alexa Blaney (South Hadley, Mass.) and Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) each found the back of the net in leading the Connecticut College women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over Wesleyan at Silfen Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Camels kicked off the match and were on the attack early in the half. In the ninth minute, they got their first major opportunity in the opponent's box on a corner kick by freshman Kristyn Moran (Hingham, Mass), but junior Marielle McEnaney (Orleans, Mass) had her shot saved by the Wesleyan keeper and the score remained even.

Johnson also let a shot rip from the top of the box in the 32nd minute of the half, but she sent it wide of the target due to the Cardinal keeper's pressure. The match remained scoreless and the possession stayed even up until junior Sarah Moore (Harvard, Mass) set up Blaney for a bottom right finish in the 44th minute of the half.

Going into the second half with a 1-0 lead, the Camels' defensive line worked tirelessly to keep Wesleyan off the board. The Cardinals could not get themselves an opportunity to tie up the score because defenders Maegen Dillon (San Anselmo Calif.), Ana Pavic (North Branford, Conn), Emma Quilty (Hingham, Mass), and Moran broke up every chance they could get.

Johnson, however, did not miss her chance to put one more on the board for the Camels. After a throw-in from Pavic in the right corner of the field, she converted a shot taken from near the flag against defensive pressure by perfectly bending it into the far upper left corner of the net to give the Camels a 2-0 lead and put the Cardinals away in the 82nd minute of play.

Freshman Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) and classmate Nici Scola (Braintree, Mass) combined for the shutout and tallied five saves collectively, while Hall was credited with the win. Wesleyan's three goalkeepers, Sarah Hammond, Erin Dailey, and Courtney Litts collectively totaled nine saves on the day, and Litts suffered the loss.
