NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Sophomore
Bridget Mason (East Greenwich, R.I.) and freshman
Rowan Galanis (Ipswich, Mass.) each scored twice as the Connecticut College field hockey team soundly defeated Smith, 5-0, to earn its first victory of the season on Tuesday evening.
Mason put the Camels on the board early and set the tone for the night by finishing a pass from classmate
Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) in the fourth minute of action for her first collegiate marker. In the second quarter, sophomore
Kylee Quinn (Sandwich, Mass.) redirected a shot high for her first collegiate marker in the 20th minute during the second quarter, and shortly afterwards, Mason scored again through a scramble to give the visitors a commanding 3-0 advantage at halftime.
Galanis then recorded her first two goals as a collegian by finding the back of the cage in the final minute of the third quarter and in the waning minutes of the fourth. The Camels outshot the Pioneers by an 18-7 margin and had a 10-6 advantage in penalty corners en route to the win.
Senior captain
Jackie Mountford (New London, N.H.) earned the win between the posts for Connecticut College by making five saves. Channy Cornell of Smith (1-6) suffered the loss after stopping five shots.
Connecticut College (1-3) will resume NESCAC play when it next hosts nationally-ranked Amherst on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
